"Have a Heart" Challenge with Di's Digital Designs: A Sweet Valentine's Easel Card

Hello, crafty friends!

I’m so excited to share my latest project for the Di's Digital Designs Challenge Blog! This week’s theme is “Have a Heart,” which means we are celebrating all things heart-shaped in our cards and projects. Whether it’s hearts in the image, hearts in the embellishments, or hearts in the sentiment, it’s all about spreading love! 💖

For this challenge, I decided to create a Valentine’s-themed card that I think will be perfect for an upcoming anniversary. I used the adorable Hearts for You” digital image from Di’s Digital Designs, which you can find here on Etsy. This sweet image of a bear holding a jar of hearts is perfect for Valentine’s Day or any romantic occasion, and it was the perfect focal point for the card I had in mind.

The Design: Octagon Shaped Easel Card with Vellum Shaker Jar

I wanted to make something unique for this challenge, so I chose to create an octagon-shaped easel card—I love how the octagon shape gives the card a fun, unexpected twist, while still feeling sweet and romantic. The layers on the card are made from different Valentine-themed papers, including some with embossed hearts. I also used paper doilies to add texture and softness to the design.

Here’s a breakdown of the elements I included in this card:

Di’s Image: “Hearts for You”

The adorable bear holding a jar of hearts is such a lovely image for a Valentine’s or anniversary card. I bought the colored image making it so easy to add to a card and saves on time.

Shaker Element: Vellum Jar with Glitter Hearts

To make the card even more interactive, I created a vellum shaker jar on the front of the card. I filled it with tiny glitter hearts that resemble conversation hearts, giving the card a playful, festive feel. The vellum gives it a soft, ethereal look, while the glitter hearts add just the right amount of sparkle.

Layers and Embellishments

The octagon card is made up of several layers of patterned Valentine’s papers. Some of the papers are embossed with heart patterns, which adds texture and dimension to the card. I also stitched around the edges of each layer for a handmade, rustic touch. To add even more heart-shaped details, I tucked a couple of paper doilies between the layers—these delicate doilies help soften the overall look and add a sweet, vintage touch.

Sentiment: I Corinthians 13:7

For the sentiment, I wanted to incorporate a meaningful verse that would add a little depth and love to the card. I chose a verse from I Corinthians 13:7:
“Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”
I found this sentiment in a Penny Black stamp set (you can find it here) and thought it was the perfect, heartfelt message to accompany the romantic theme of this card. I embossed the sentiment in sparkly red to keep it elegant and add to the luxurious feel of the card.

Finishing Touches: Handmade Pink Daisy

To complete the look, I created a handmade pink daisy using paper flowers, which I added to the bottom right corner of the card. The soft pink color of the flower adds the perfect amount of contrast to all the reds and golds, and it ties in beautifully with the Valentine’s color scheme.

Why This Card is So Special

This card turned out to be the perfect mix of sweet, elegant, and interactive—it’s got a little bit of everything! The shaker element brings a fun twist, while the heartfelt sentiment and delicate layers give it that extra special touch. I’m planning on using this card for a friend’s anniversary coming up in February. I know they will absolutely love it! 💕

I think this design will be versatile enough for not just Valentine’s Day, but for any romantic occasion, whether it’s an anniversary, engagement, or just a special note to someone you love.
