Deck the Palms – A Fun Beachy Holiday Card for My Time To Craft Christmas Challenge #104
Hello, crafty friends!
I’m back with another fun and festive card for my Design Team entry in the My Time To Craft Christmas Challenge #104. This time, we’re continuing with our Shaped Cards theme, and the challenge is all about rectangle-shaped cards. I’ve got something extra special to share with you today—my Pop-Out Rectangle Slimline Card featuring none other than Santa on the beach! 🌴🎅
The Inspiration Behind the Card:
When I saw the theme for this challenge, I immediately knew I wanted to create a non-traditional holiday card. After all, who says Christmas has to be all snowflakes and frosty landscapes? For this card, I combined a bit of tropical fun with the classic Christmas spirit, and the result is a card that’s perfect for anyone who dreams of sand between their toes instead of snow underfoot.
How I Made the Card:
- The Base - Pop-Out Rectangle Slimline:I used my "Snow Hills Slimline Popup Box Card" SVG file from my Etsy shop for the card’s structure. Normally, this file is designed for a wintery scene with snowbanks, but I gave it a fun twist by transforming the snow hills into sand dunes and the snowflakes into waves. The shape of the slimline card works perfectly for this beachy scene, and the pop-out elements create a delightful 3D effect when the card is opened.
- The Santa Images:For the main images, I chose to use the retired "Deck the Palms" stamp set from La-La Land Crafts. The set features the cutest Santa and palm tree images, which were just begging to be part of this beach-themed Christmas card. I colored all three of the adorable Santas (one with a surfboard, one with sunglasses, and one lounging under a palm tree) using Ohuhu Alcohol Markers. I love how the markers blend so smoothly and give such a vibrant finish to the images!
- Creating the Beachy Scene:For the sand hills, I used Distress Ink to create a soft, sun-kissed beach scene. I blended the ink in varying shades to add depth and dimension to the sand, and then I accented the waves with a white gel pen to give them a little extra sparkle. The palm trees from the stamp set were colored with the same markers, and I placed them strategically behind the Santas to complete the tropical vibe.
- Finishing Touches:To add even more detail, I included a few elements like a crab (from a stamp I had colored previously), a couple of die-cut clouds, and of course, the perfect sentiment: "Deck the Palms". This sentiment is a playful twist on the classic “Deck the Halls” and really ties the whole beachy Christmas theme together.
- The Pop-Out Feature:One of the things I love about this card is the way the layers pop out when it’s opened. The design makes the Santas and palm trees stand out from the background, creating a fun and interactive element. It’s the kind of card that’s a joy to receive because it surprises and delights when opened.
Why I Love This Card:
A Non-Traditional Twist on Christmas: The idea of Santa lounging on the beach is just so much fun! It’s a non-traditional take on a holiday card, and I can totally picture it brightening someone’s day who lives by the ocean or who just hates the cold.
The Pop-Out Design: I always love creating cards with interactive elements, and this pop-out slimline card does not disappoint. The 3D effect adds a playful dimension that makes the card feel extra special.
Bright, Fun Colors: I went with vibrant colors to match the tropical theme. The bright reds, blues, and greens really make the images pop against the sandy beach background, and it all comes together to create a cheerful, eye-catching card.
Who Would Love This Card?
This card would be perfect for anyone who lives near the beach, has a tropical vacation in their future, or simply prefers warm weather to the cold of winter. It’s a fun and unexpected way to spread some Christmas cheer, and it’s sure to make anyone smile who isn’t quite ready for the typical snowy holiday card.
